about

since sufjan stevens decided to put a halt to the "50 states" project, I wrote a batch of Texas-themed songs in that spirit... this is one of them.

lyrics

some ghost cut holes in the sky at night, some spirit from the heavenly realm
left trails that glow for the realm below when the sun goes dripping down

could we see you, would we believe you?
even if one were to rise like the sun, some would still not see

yesterday up on the bandstand
rebels in redcoats shuffled their feet
who, in the oil of the west texas soil, could believe?

he is an old man now, his spirit stayed on
after his body collapsed there in the ditch
he was so lonely then, just like the westward wind
all of his stuff never enough to make his soul rich

then he looked up and noticed a cloud
heavenly oil came raining down
the mountains did shine
filled with new wine
the marfa lights, shining so bright
never went out
